Being the oldest sibling has its own ups and downs- and I can attest to that. There are times that I’m thankful and times that I feel shit and wished that I’m just an only child. LOL. I think that many older siblings like me can relate to this 😛
Having a sister and a brother is both wonderful and a nightmare at the same time – so here are some of the craziest, sad and happy moments that I’ve experienced as the oldest sibling in the family:
- Caught in between
One thing that I really hate the most: When my 2 younger siblings fight! And it’s just not an ordinary fight, I’ll tell you. It’s world war III – there would be a lot of shouting, flying slippers, Curse words, flipping the tables and so much more.
The fight that was the most memorable to me happened when I was in high school. That time, my parents were both working in the office and I just got home from school. My siblings were then fighting in the living room, and at first I didn’t mind them- until they started to physically hurt each other.
Annoyed and angry as hell, I tried to stop them by pushing them apart- and I got hurt in the process and my clothes are almost ripped off! I shouted at the top of my lungs to stop them, but to no avail.
Then I got an idea. A stupid, and quite scary idea. HAHAHA
I went to the kitchen and grabbed 2 kitchen knives. AND I GAVE IT TO BOTH OF THEM. HAHAHA. And the shouting magically stopped. I asked them,
“Why you
Neither of them said a word. They just glared at each other, glared at me then went into their rooms. HAHAHA THAT WAS ONE EPIC MOMENT.
And guess what? After a few hours, they are playing and laughing with each other again! Crazy siblings. HAHAHA.
2. Being blamed for my siblings mistakes.
Another thing that I really hate- sometimes I get blamed for my siblings mistakes! I know that the eldest sibling is seen as the second parent in the family- especially in Asian countries. And of course, the fault of one sibling, is the responsibility of the eldest sibling.
I remembered one time when my youngest brother forgot to do a certain household chore and instead of reprimanding my brother, my mother got angry at me! Like WTF I didn’t even know that she instructed my brother to do that chore! She was angry at me because I didn’t remind my brother to do the chore and since he forgot, I should have done the chore instead. I was currently doing my homework at that time and I was so pissed at her. I usually answer back at my parents [yeah, I know I’m a brat] escalated into a shouting match between me and my mother.
Yes, I know it sucks, but thankfully, it doesn’t happen so much nowadays. Maybe because we are all grown ups now and my siblings are old enough to be responsible 🙂
3. The pressure to act as the “oldest sibling”.
This is the worst part of being the oldest sibling – you feel guilty whenever you get into trouble because you are expected as the role model. I was reprimanded a lot because of this- let’s just say that I caused my parent’s headache a lot when I was younger, especially when it comes to academics. There are many times that I labeled myself as the “black sheep” of the family because of what I did in the past 🙁
Not only that, but my siblings are better than me with a lot of things: In academics [my sister was a consecutive Dean’s Lister and my brother had received many honors], in household chores, and they are more sociable compared to me. I admit that I got jealous of them many times, but at the end of the day, I remind myself that I’m not the same as them- and being the oldest doesn’t mean that you are greater than your siblings.
The joy of being the oldest- and having siblings
Despite of all of these oldest sibling problems, I still love them- and it’s true. I really hope that they don’t read this because they laugh at cheesy lines like this one. 😀
On a serious note, I love them not only because they are my family, but because of who they are and what they had done to me. They are my shoulder to cry on and my support whenever I’m disappointed with my parents, career and life. I also ask them for their advice when it comes to life issues – and believe me, their advices had helped me a lot many times.
Being the oldest also helped me to become more responsible and to get to be closer to my siblings. I know that I’ve made a lot of mistakes in the past, but I made them as my lesson guide to them- so they will know what to do and what to avoid in the future. I also show my childish and funny side to them, because I don’t want them to see me as the “boss” or “leader” but as an ordinary sibling, just like them.
Shout out to all the oldest siblings out there and yes, It’s frustrating- and great to have a sibling!
