After 11 years, we returned again to one of the top tourist destinations here in the Philippines: Mt. Mayon Volcano. It’s been a long, long time since I saw Mt. Mayon but its beauty never changed. Upon arriving Legazpi, we visited 2 places that provides a fantastic view of Mt. Mayon: Sumlang Lake and Cagsawa Ruins.
1. Sumlang Lake
This gorgeous lake is situated in Camalig, Albay and although the lake is just small, you will enjoy here the perfect view of Mt. Mayon Volcano.
For a perfect viewing of Mt. Mayon, Sumlang Lake have cute balsas (bamboo rafts) w/ a boatman who will tour you around the lake. There is also a restaurant nearby and a souvenir shop of their handicrafts and delicacies.
2. Cagsawa Ruins
This is the place we went to when we viewed Mt. Mayon 11 years ago. From what I’ve remembered, the only thing you will see in the place is the remains of the 16th- century Cagsawa Church and that time is the aftermath of the mud flow tragedy, caused by the typhoon Reming. I remembered seeing houses destroyed by the mud flow as we walk by while our tour guide was telling us their difficult experience during the storm.
11 years later, I can’t even recognize the place anymore once we got there. The place was transformed into a national park with many souvenir shops, ATV rides and even a small resort with a pool. The only thing that remained is the bell tower which withstood many eruptions and storms.
Despite the rainfall, we were very lucky that we’ve got to see Mt. Mayon again after a long time. It is the perfect end note to our Sorsogon adventure and i hope that we’ll be back here again soon. (please not 11 years again!)
Till next time, Mt. Mayon!
